Hello again people. It's me, that one derp that can't do anything but, back again with another blog. But this is not just any blog post. Oh no, it's one about STAHVEN UNIVARSE (Steven Universe).
Now, this show is probably one of the only shows I watch anymore on Cartoon Network, mainly because any others I'm just not either attached to enough to actively watch it, or I just plain dislike it. As harsh as that sounds, I still respect those that watch those shoes (Gumball, Teen Titans Go, etc.) however, none of those really ever caught my attention until SU. I feel like the main reason behind this is how the show treats its characters and how those characters develop. Take Lars for instance. But before that, *SPOILER WARNING AGAIN*
Anyway, when we first meet Lars, he is revealed in the pilot of the show, and acts basically as the bully, immature, rude character that contrasts the nicer, sweeter Sadie, his crush (I SHIP IT %250. FITE ME) and fellow co-worker at the Big Donut. At this time, we see him, as said before, be rude to Steven for one reason or another. Eventually, in the most recent special "Wanted" that aired back in May, Lars is one of the mainly featured characters due to him not leaving the gem ship when Steven went on a rescue mission for him and the other kidnapped humans. Due to this, Steven and Lars get taken to Homeworld, yada yada yada, and an episode later, Lars dies by being blown into a rocky pillar. However, Steven uses his healing abilities without realizing it after doing a Tangled moment on Lars- crying over top of him, causing him to come back to life due to the tears that fell onto him. However, Lars becomes pink, and gains the ability to have his hair used by Steven as a portal to the pocket dimension, which is the exact same ability that Lion has, with the added bonus that both dimensions are connected. With this discovery, Lars basically says that Steven and the other gems there (Padparadscha, Rutile, Flourite and Rhodonite) to go through this hair to get to Earth, while he stays behind. In the end, Steven decides to go to Earth while the others stay with Lars. Que the end fade away and the grueling months of hiatus.
Now, by this time, it has been many years since Lars' first official appearance in the show, and he certainly has grown since then. Clearly, considering he was willing to stay alone for possibly months on the homeworld of all gem-kind with no real way to protect himself, all while Steven and the other gems go to Earth. If that isn't character development (it is, considering how he was beforehand: bratty, bully-like, you get the gist) then I don't know what is.
In a similar fashion, Connie is a major example of development as well. She's gone from a nerdy, book loving normal girl with glasses to a still nerdy, book loving girl that can swordfight, fuse with Steven into Stevonnie, and also train with the likes of Pearl as a mentor, all while not needing glasses despite having to wear them until her mother finds out in an episode a while back. Basically, Connie has grown very much, along with Lars, and it's how characters can be treated as such by going from a cookie cutter-esque type of person into their own fully realized character, albeit many, many episodes later.
Moving onto another reason I love SU is because of the music. OH. MY GAWD. If I could just know the name of every piece of music to every grace the show, whether it be song or background, I would NEVER BE UPSET EVER AGAIN. At least about music. It's just mainly how music can capture the essence and tone of an atmosphere in the show, such as in fusion dances, that makes the show, to me, way better. Not as much as I expected to have to talk about regarding music.
Or the show in general cause I'm too tired to think of anything else. It's almost 3 in the morning, asking for more than what I've already said would kill me. But, I will say, be sure to look out for a part two to this when I feel up to it.
