Not everyone that joins can speak English natively (I can, but there are users whose English isn't the best.) Is it okay to respond in a different language if a person's first language is not English under the guise we can provide an English translation? I've only so far made one reply fitting this bill to a thread written in Russian, which I'm trying to learn.

Yes, that's completely fine. I find that very thoughtful. There isn't a problem as long as nothing said is against the rules. We would prefer them to converse with us in English, but it would give us nothing but joy to make them feel at home in our community. If discoursing with them in their native language would do so, we are happy to oblige and speak to them in their language to the best of our ability.
