Threads. What's the point?

I don't really understind what threads even are. Are they like something you just post questions on. Are they just basically ways to chat between groupp members or random people that see your thread post? Could they be both?(Such ad this thread) It would be delightful if someone would explain threads to me. (I feel like it is stupid of me to post a thread about me not even knowing what they're for....)

A thread is basically a post that starts a topic, asks a question, files a report, introduces you, etc. Can contain media, others can comment.
