Chapter Five-New School, New Secrets

Today was long; just like any other first day I’ve experienced. I’ve spent the day travelling from class to class spending half of it listening to the class syllabus and expectations and all of that stuff the teachers talk about on any old first day. The other half was the teachers talking about the first unit. Coming from a human school, I did not understand the majority of what they were saying as almost everyone else had came from a school where they learned those magical topics. I attempted to understand this new universe by taking notes. I feel like I’m only halfway to understanding these notes.

Potions class was the worst. The potions teacher is another spirit leader; the fire leader. Her name is Mrs. Amber, and she made me so stressed with her stiff, loud, varsity coach-like words that I was glad I wasn’t in Ignis.

“Alright you little sparks; potions class is a difficult subject, but I want to see you all go above and beyond with it! ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME? I hope that with my teaching, you’ll all, especially the Ignis’, get above average grades! DID YOU HEAR ME?”

Um…all that yelling won’t help me learn. That will just make things worse for me. Luckily, we didn’t actually do any potions this class because it was the first day, we just learned about them.

My last class of the day, Beauty Spells appears to be much better than potions; the teacher is this pixie with a pink bun and bright lipstick similar to the pixies I’ve seen in other parts of the building. Just like potions (and most of my other classes), we didn’t really do much in this class today other than listening to the teacher talk about flowers and stuff. I again, tried to take notes and understand those words.

After the class ended, I was thrilled to get through my first day which lasted seemingly twenty four hours. I was about to approach the exit at the front of the school ready to step on the bus, but then I realized, “Oh yeah, it’s a boarding school!” I stand still frozen and nervous because I don’t know where my dorm room is supposed to be and no one told me about it.

While walking through the hallways looking for the dorm room, I run into Nora again.

“Hi!” she greets as she enthusiastically notices me, “It’s nice flying into you again!”

I chuckle a bit anxiously, “Um, are you going to your dorm room?” I ask hoping she would help me.

“No.” Nora responds confused, “I’m on my way to my last class of the day.”

“Okay, that was an awkward question”.

I look down at my feet embarrassed by my usual socializing failure, “Well, I’m looking for my dorm.”

“Oh, follow me” Nora tells me lighting up in enthusiasm.

“But won’t you be late?” I question.

“My teacher, will forgive me for helping a newcomer”

Nora walks me to the end of the center hallway to one of the parts of the school which I’ve never visited before. When we reach the bright light coming from the large triangular glass window, I notice the daylight shining towards a round, wooden door that’s about a foot taller than me standing in the middle of the area with the tiniest knob which looks like a clear crystal. The door doesn’t appear to lead anywhere as it’s standing just between me and the window and not being pressed onto any walls.

“This is the portal door which takes students to their house common rooms,” Nora explains.

I walk behind the door without opening it, and just as I expect, I end up between the back of the door and the window, no where special. “Um, does the door actually lead anywhere?” I ask.

Nora giggles, “It’s a magic door. But in order for it to work, you just have to stand straight in front of the door and the crystal knob will scan you. Then, the door will open and all you have to do is walk in”

Oh, yeah! It’s Spirit Prep, the school where the lunch magically appears in front of you! I have to ignore logic now!

“I gotta go” Nora tells me flittering down the corridor on the right of the door.

“Wait!” Although I’m still puzzled, Nora did tell what to do, so I guess I should try it; I take a deep breath as I stand stiff and as straight as possible in front of the tiny white crystal on the door. It then seemed to scan me with a solid scanning light the color of the crystal before flashing green. And then, it opened revealing a bright, difficult to look at white light, but I walked in the light with my eyes shut tightly and body feeling tense.

When the brightness tightly shutting my eyes fades and I’m able to open my eyes, I grow shocked to see I’m suddenly in this small cozy looking room with earth colored wallpaper and moss carpet. The room’s filled with different sized, green leaved potted plants in every corner and comfy looking moss covered studying seats and tiny wooden tables. I can see a few bench wooden swings with flowers on the vine strings hanging from the ceiling. It’s the first time today when I only see students wearing the green uniform. They’re sitting on the rug, swing and reclining on the comfy chairs mostly quietly reading and doing homework while a few are sitting on the rug quietly chatting. I look behind myself to see where I came from, and I notice a large rectangular painting of the stone castle school I’m in as tall as the wall.

While admiring my new home for the next year, a pixie suddenly flies right in front of my nose; she wears forest green colored bun, wings and outfit. She carries a tiny green rectangular scrolled lead and a small feather quill pen.

“Daisy Green, right?” she asks.

“Yup, that’s me” I respond awkwardly looking around.

“Follow me and I’ll take you to your dorm room”

The pixie leads me to a corridor on the left of the common room with the same wallpaper as the common room and softer feeling, more fluorescent carpet. On both sides of me are lines of doors made of brown wood with carved numbers.

“This is it!” The pixie points to a wooden door with the number 8 carved. “Your luggage is already in there”

I open the door to my tiny room and immediately feel comfortable and at home. Although it’s way smaller than the common room, it has just as much plants bringing in the natural scent. On each side of the beds are small changing rooms covered my Kelly green silk curtains. The beds are each made of wood with a soft, green mattress and smooth darker green blanket. They each have a lot of pillows, most are green and brown but some had pink accents and one of them is a pink camellia pillow. On the left bed is a fairy with wings that seem to resemble transparent spring leaves. Her not so flawless brown hair is tied in a thick not so confined bun. Her eyes are light brown. She’s lying down on her front facing the door with her legs up. Although she was reading a brown leather covered book, she quickly glances at me when I walk in.

I attempt to smile at the girl to be polite.

The girl looks at me again, “You must be my roommate” she says in a dull tone.

“Hi.” I say smiling and walking in, “I’m Daisy”

“I never saw you before, are you new?”

“Yes.” I reply sitting on my smooth, well made bed, “Um, what’s your name?”

The girl switches to sitting position, “My name is Gabriella Evergreene, but everyone simply calls me Gabi”

After a brief moment of awkward silence, Gabi continues to read while I lie down on my bed staring at the sky blue ceiling. The only other time I talked to Gabi today is when she told me that I have to walk through the painting of the school in the common room in order to return to the main hallway. What I did at the end of the day was unpack, go to dinner, take a relaxing shower in the school’s shower chamber, and go to bed hoping I’ll understand the lessons more tomorrow.

Me and Gabi wake up right around the same time as the sun rises the next morning.  We get ready as we would before any normal school day without acknowledging each other.

After we each walk out of the changing curtains in our rooms Gabi decides to ask me a question, “What do you have for first block today?”

“History of magic” I answer while looking at my schedule.

“Same,” Gabi sighs, “Mrs. Fluttersage is literally the worst teacher ever. Like, I am a Terra, and many Terra’s actually listen to the teachers and take notes, but I still had to do all the learning on my wand just so I can get an awesome grade on a test. Also, history of magic is the most boring class ever; it’s almost exactly like a human class!”

“Well, I went to a human school myself so I think I’ll get used to it.” I say trying to sound optimistic.

“I can’t imagine going to a human school.” Gabi responds, “I feel so sorry for you”

Immediately after breakfast in the dining hall, I enter the History of Magic room looking at the wooden tables for Gabi to sit next to because I didn’t know anyone else. I sat next to her, even though we didn’t talk to each other at all. I look around the classroom; out of all of them, this one looks most like a human school classroom. I recall what Gabi said about the teacher and stop looking forward for the class to start because I’d likely fail.

“Settle down, settle down” said a dull, low, hard to comprehend voice. A tall, oldish, frowning woman with large light brown eyes and brown hair tied in a very neat bun wearing a very impressive and expensive looking light gold dress with a silver silk jacket and pearl necklace walks in the room and up to the large dark violet blackboard thing in front of the classroom. This was the first time I’ve seen a teacher walk in the room like a normal person as opposed to magically appearing in a shower of fairy dust in front of the board.

Mrs. Fluttersage sighs loudly looking like she just wants to sleep, “You need to understand how difficult it is to be a professor at a top school. After mumbling for a bit, she takes a deep breath and turns her entire body to the class, “We’re gonna start the day off with some...questions”

Just then, a piece of parchment and a quill and ink appeared in front of all of us similar to how the food appears.

“Work on it with your tablemates” Mrs Fluttersage instructs firmly, “I expect you to know these”

I read the questions on the parchment:

  1. Who was the founder of Mythabia? What year?  How?
  2. Where is Goldleaf located?
  3. What is the farthest magical realm from Earth?

Before I even finish reading the questions, I know I’m 100% certain that I didn’t know the answer to any of these.

“Do you know the answer to any of these questions?” I ask.

“No!” Gabi responds in a “duh” tone facing me, “Even magical beings don’t know the answer to some of these these! I told you I hated this class!

Most of history wasn’t actually learning anything but rather sitting still on the desk staring at the roman numeral wall clock. I know I couldn’t contribute to the group because I don’t know a single thing about magic. Spell Casting class today ended up being a lot better as I seem to see a slight improvement in my levitation exercise which gives me more energy and confidence. While going to Nature Spells excited, even though I had successfully gone to the class yesterday and even though I have a map, I become lost in a very unfamiliar looking area that’s not to far from the shower chamber.

As opposed to the polished stone walls and the busy hallways full of pupils, this one is completely quiet, chilly and empty with a wet floor. It looks as if the walls haven’t been polished in ages and it appears as if I’m in some sort of ruined castle. There isn’t a single window here. There are door-like openings, but inside are black rooms that look empty as if no one has been in there in a while. This area feels like part of the school, but at the same time, it looks and feels like a separate part of the school. I avoid the black creepy looking openings as they really scare me, and I manage to find my way back to the main hallway with some wondering.

Things were mostly smooth for my second day of school, except for potions which still stresses me out.  Teagen has occasionally been annoying me as well. History of Magic on the beginning of the third day was very stressful too. I seem to be bonding with Gabi over this class, but I’m guessing Mrs. Fluttersage hates me because I get everything wrong or something like that. Other than those three things, I seem to be getting used to life here.

I took gym second block on the third day. It’s sort of similar to human school gym in a way, but I think it’ll be better because I’ve heard we get to fly and do magical sports, and I met two other pupils that will likely be my “gym friends”. One of them is a pretty Aqua with smooth and flawless light brown hair and a cheerful personality (she actually told me she does this magical version of cheerleading) and she was one of the sweetest people I met here so far. And there was Phoebe, a super tan Ignis with short, brown, messy hair. She’s an extremely fast runner. She seems to be competitive, but she’s friends with Kristine and seems nice. The gym teacher is an elf, and he’s kind of cute, even though teacher crushes are the weirdest thing ever,

Art class seems fun; Kristine is in this class and I like how these magical paintbrushes are a bit easier to use as normal paintbrushes and the paint is much prettier and shimmerier than average paint.

Things might actually turn out well here in Spirit Prep, but I couldn’t stop thinking about this dark hidden area which really startled me. Now that I have a bit more trust for Malissa, I decided to ask her about it.

Malissa was silent for a moment before responding, “Several new students have stumbled across this mysterious hall near the showers while getting lost on their way to class. I’ve come across this myself, and I have no clue what this is. Maybe it used to be another hallway or something”

“That’s what I think too,” I reply, “but it just seems so…creepy”

“There is a rumor that people that were related to the darkness of magic attended this school for a period of time.” Malissa says, “Some even said there was a whole separate house for them. Maybe their classrooms were in there?”

“Darkness in Spirit Prep” I think. I really want to learn more about it.
