Spirit Prep Chapter Four

Chapter Four-Not the only one

My next class was Nature Spells, and that’s where I got to meet my house leader who teaches this class. Her name is Emerald, and she’s one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. Her flawless hair is hued in a forest green color and was tied in a neat, perfect bun. She was wearing a dark green dress that seemed to be made out of thin leaves sewn together. Her lighter green jacket also appeared to be made out of leaves. I was very happy that Teagen isn’t in that class because after Spell Casting, it was certain that she would hold a grudge against me. So far, I’m guessing that Nature Spells will be my favorite class because I really like Emerald. Even though Nature Spells was difficult because it’s also about magic which I’m a total noob at, she appeared to really like me for some reason.

I was very happy that she understood me, but she also appeared to be really interested in me, probably because I grew up in the human world and I’m one of the only people in the school that did or something. While I was doing this warm up exercise on sprouting plants, Emerald was surprisingly encouraging when I only got that plant to sprout out the soil a centimeter long before burying itself back in. In fact, I find that she was very curious about my origins. She asked questions every time she checked on me like,

“Were your parents magical?”

“Did you know you were magical?”

“What was life like in the human world?”

The only thing I knew the answer to was that I was an outsider at my old school. When I told her that, Emerald put her slightly transparent palish hand on my shoulder and said, “Everyone feels that way”. She looks at me with her large, dark green eyes and smiles at me in an encouraging way.

After Nature Spells, it’s finally time for lunch. Unlike the classrooms, I didn’t have much trouble finding the dining hall as there were two large entrances in the far right end of the school, and it seems to be the largest room in the school. Students were taking their seats at the round and rectangular, wooden cafeteria tables finding their friends as soon as I walked in. There‘s a bronze loft immediately above the entrance where Willow, Emerald and three other spirits that appear to be the other house leaders were taking their seats in a long, rectangular silver table on the loft overlooking the rest of the cafeteria. Willow is sitting in the large gold throne-like seat with violet cushions in the center of the table. The other house leaders are sitting in slightly smaller silver chairs with shiny cushions in what seems to be their house color. Short boys that look about my age wearing the same long sleeved velvet outfit (mostly in green but a few in other colors) and pointy hats are taking the small, wooden outer chairs in the table. While everyone else settles in their chairs, I look around at the strangers in the cafeteria thinking about where I should sit. I don’t know many people, so it would be unrealistic for me to find a seat right away.

“Hurry wandless girl!” a loud impatient voice shouts, “You have to find a seat or else everyone will have to wait to eat!” I look around. Just as I guessed by the nickname, “wandless girl”, the voice is coming from Teagen. The braided girl next to her glares at me.

“Do you want to sit with us?” a girl asks in a much sweeter voice. I look to see where the voice is coming from; it’s coming from a girl wearing the purple uniform which I’m guessing means she’s an Aier based on conversations I’ve overheard on what house people were in. She’s really pretty with her natural looking, yet beautiful face, but her chocolate brown hair with bangs looks very casual, but it’s very neat as well..

The girl smiles at me, “I’m Malissa”

“I’m Daisy,” I reply sitting on the empty seat on Malissa’s left, “and, don’t assume that I know so much about magic, because I grew up in the human world, even though I’m a spirit.”

I gasp after saying that; why did I say that? I just didn’t want that girl to immediately start a conversation about something I don’t understand. But immediately, after I told her this, I regretted it. It’s just that she appears to be so trustworthy and comforting.

“I understand,” Malissa responds to my relief, “I’m a human myself, but I was one of those lucky humans that befriended magical beings. So, they are allowed to apply for Spirit Prep, and I got accepted”

What? There’s another human here? I can’t believe it! I only thought one human gets accepted a year, that’s what I’ve heard people say. This is just so awesome but I just can’t talk to anyone without fearing that I’d sound awkward. I never even have interesting things to say anyway.

Before that awkward moment of silence fully kicked in, I hear a clap coming from Willow standing from the loft in front of her seat, “Attention students,” she announces in a loud and powerful but comfortable voice, “You may now eat”. She waves both of her hands to summon a quick shower of fairy dust the color of her skin. As the dust landed on the tables, food appeared in front of everyone. In front of me is a cream cheese bagel on an elegant plate that reminds me of a china plate, a glass goblet of milk, an apple placed on a thin napkin on the left of the main plate, and some golden oatmeal cookies on a tiny plate on the right. Elegant silverware is also on the tables. If we could pick our lunch like we do in the human world, this dish is exactly what I’d pick. I don’t know how Willow knows what kind of lunch I like, but I’m guessing the answer is magic as everything in this school seems to be magical.

I begin to eat hoping that no one will talk to me and begin the awkwardness that almost always occurs while I’m in conversations. After I finish my peaceful meal, I look around the table because I’m bored and I usually people watch when that happens. When Malissa notices that I’m looking at her, she enthusiastically smiles at me and points to the girl sitting on the other side of her, “Oh, Daisy, this is Kylie.. She is a human that also grew up in the human world”

Kylie gives me a shy, brief smile with her small mouth. She’s taller than Malissa with slightly tanner skin. She’s thin and athletic looking despite her shy expressions. Her dirty blonde hair is tied in a long, thick, high ponytail with a hair tie the color of the tropical ocean. The food she’s eating looks healthy, as her main meal is a salad. I’m guessing she’s an Aqua because of her blue uniform.

I quickly smile back at Kylie, but then I wonder out loud, “Wait, if she’s an ordinary human from the human world, than why is she here?”

“Well, Kylie has assisted this famous spirit hero in the Core named Lilly Loveheart” Malissa explains. Kylie silently gives a small smile in agreement with a pinkish face.

“Wow, there are THREE humans at Spirit Prep this year?” a tan, skinny Aier taller than me with a neat, tan bun right across for me questions in disbelief. “We are always lucky to get just one new student with a human background, but the three that arrived this year is just very interesting.” The girl quickly blushes, “Oh, I’m Camille by the way.”

Today’s lunch was probably the best school lunch I’ve ever experienced. Not only was the food much better than what I usually eat (mom’s always in a huge rush to make my lunch, so there usually isn’t enough cream cheese on the bagel and she sometimes forgets some of the food), I actually made a plethora of new friends. Sure, I thought I’d much rather have a lunch where I just eat and don’t talk, but socializing with those people was so fun that I’m actually looking forward to the next meal. Along with Malissa and Kylie who I can actually relate too because they’re humans, I’ve met Camille and her friends Alexis and Tyra. They’re all dancers on the Spirit Prep dance team. I didn’t talk to them as much as Malissa and Kylie, whom I’ve talked to about our lives in the human world and where we lived before we visited the magical realms and stuff like that. Well, it’s time for us all to get to class now. I leave the cafeteria full of excitement and energy greater than when I first entered.

On my way to potions class, I bump into someone while looking at the map. I look up and notice that I’ve bumped into a pale boy looking right at me. He looks like one of the elves from the dining hall loft wearing the suit and pointy hat as blue as the night sky. He stands at around my height and his eyes are large and blue and although his hair was almost completely covered by his hat, it looks as black as night. I’d have to say that he’s really handsome, but I don’t want to admit it. Every time I cross paths with a boy, especially a handsome one, my stomach always jumps and I always lose focus. There’s just so much on my mind every time this happens; does he have a crush on me? Am I supposed to have a crush on him? Is he good enough to date? Does he already have a girlfriend? I don’t want to ask these questions or date anyone because I’m not interested in love really.

“Oh, hi.” The boy says with a smile, “I’m Artemis.” He shakes my hand with his thick arm.

“I’m Daisy.” I respond secretly hoping he’ll leave soon, “What are you doing here? I thought this was a girls’ only school”

“Elves sometimes work as teacher’s assistants.” Artemis explains.

After staring at each other in an awkward moment of silence, Artemis finally says, “I gotta go”

I head to potions in a sigh of relief. Usually when I cross paths with a boy, I forget I ever spoke to him as soon as the awkward approach is over because most couples my age I’ve experienced break up within the first month or two, I’ve always assumed relationships are nightmares seconds after the time I consider if being in one is like butterflies and rainbows (which I’m somehow doing a lot more this year then I have done in the past). So, I’m forgetting right now like I usually do, but why am I having trouble forgetting about him?
